Thumbs up It happened today – 10 July

On 10th July 2011, the British Grand Prix was held at Silverstone. Quickest in qualifying was Red Bull’s Australian driver Mark Webber, who was just 32 thousandths quicker than his team-mate Sebastian Vettel. The two Ferrari 150° Italias occupied the second row, with Fernando Alonso ahead of Felipe Massa.

Thanks partly to the track being wet, the Red Bulls maintained position at the start, but once it was time to fit Intermediates and then slicks, Alonso was able to catch the two leaders. At the second stops, Fernando passed Hamilton who was third at the time, and two slow pit stops from Red Bull promoted him into first place.

From then on, Alonso was on a charge and even Vettel struggled to keep up. Fernando won in perfect solitude by more than 16 seconds, while Vettel had to fend off a Webber comeback. The Australian had managed to pass Hamilton and close on his team-mate and despite repeated orders from the pit wall to “maintain position” he attacked four times, but to no avail. There was also a scrap for fourth, between Hamilton and Massa, the latter spinning at the final coner having been clipped by the Englishman.
