I think you guys are assuming the 2012 cars will be similar to the 2011 cars.... but given the aerodynamic loss from the elimination of the EBD, I'm not sure that's necessarily going to happen?

That's true. The lack of EBD is expected to reduce the performance. There are also many factors as Pirelli brings new tires this year, and the teams are trying different new ideas. We won't know if we indeed ends up slower or faster than last year until the first race when we can finally compare the qualifying lap times.
But then why is lap 57 so fast?
And in the previous stint it's the same: Lap 42 much more faster than lap 43. Then , for laps 43 to 54 the car is slower, with an exception in laps 49-50.
I think (and hope!) this will be solved when the new aero parts (the advanced materials issue) are introduced.

I highly doubt the Ferrari is dropping 1.25 seconds due to tires after 5 laps. If the car can't go 5 laps on a set new tires, then lap times are the least of Ferrari's concerns. People need to relax and stop trying to jump to their own conclusions.
Weird looking burnt skin on the merc
Just looking closer at the new diffuser we ran today and the slits in the top frame and the gurney over the diffuser. Firstly there are slits that weren't there before. Now, it makes sense to me that you create a different feed to anywhere on the diffuser it would have a different output to create downforce through different pressures and air speeds. Hence my original question about what source could be feeding those slits.
I also notice that the material seems a little different (colour anyway) of the diffuser frame which now holds the slits. But, it also appears the gurney is very different material (I acknowledge it might just be angle and lighting contributing to this). But still it looks like it is a material that could be better suited to heat. Also, if you look a the gurney it has lost the crimps on the sides at the corners which (I assume) where there to accommodate the gurney angle. But in the new diffuser the gurney appears to be straight which would seem to indicate it is feeding rather than acting strictly as a gurney. One last point, our gurney in Barcelona last year was deemed illegal partly because it had no angle.
About the second laps: other teams are not slower on second laps, some are even faster. I mean, these are not Qualy tires...
About the last lap: yeah, maybe you are right, it seems to be too few laps to be a tire issue..
BTW, i think nobody here is panicking, just trash talking.. I'm quite sure we are going to solve everything during the Barcelona test. :)
News: someone has asked joseluisf1 if the f2012 is eating up the tires, and he answers that it is just a matter of fine tunning the Pull Rod suspensions.

beautiful:
What's that black tab on the side of the rear wing there? Sensor?
They have shaped the gurney into an aerofoil shape..
improves airflow & importantly reduces the intensity of the vortices created..
Say what ya like, but taking the nose out of the question, we got the most beautiful car
I would go for an ugly and fast car rather than a beautiful one.
From certain angles the car is just pure sexy!

News from joseluisf1. I translated from spanish:
"In the morning, they tested the new manufactured parts to see if they solved the aero anomalies, with positive outcome."
"Now the F2012 doesn't suffer from the unexpected/random/intermittent losses of downforce in curves"
"Later they tested the START SYSTEM, once calibrated, it was better than the one tested in Jerez."
"The cooling system had some reliability issues, but they were solved. But it's necessary to improve it with higher temps"
"It was hard to get a right setup, despite the simulator tests. Once achieved, the F2012 started to show it's potential"
"With the aero anomalies solved, other defeciences emerged. More laps are needed to have data to improve"

The more i read about that the more i'm beginning to think that come Melbourne the team will still be busy with fine- tuning.
What is that "pit lane exit" system???
joseluisf1: "For English people, 'sistema de salida' = 'Start system' NOT 'Exit', this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EDp8ie3sWA"
LOL, i'm spanish and i didn't undertand it neither.
