Flow vis test with the new front wing.
Also note the small fins on the bargeboard.
Anyone know what was that "antenna" in the rear of the saubers?
It's a pitot tube array - measuring device for aero purposes. Teams use it to compare their CFD simulation results with real flow.
Edit: They measured the flow at the area where exhaust gases should help seal the dif.
Lotus stalling their rear wing when DRS is activated. Very Clever.
well if it only works when drs is used than it is worse than mercs DDRS,because this means even less rear downforce=worse aero balance.Merc's DDRS does not only reduce drag but should make the car more stable when in drs than any other car and the lotus should be the worst. But if they got some loophole and make it work like 2010s f-duct than they would have a huge advantage especially in race trim
Interesting ideas coming from Lotus.
Scarbs comment:
I think this season has been a very exciting season in terms of development, compared to previous years where the focus is all on blown diffuser only.@ScarbsF1
The Lotus DRS development is clearly far more complicated than it appears on the surface. I'd say its effect will be misunderstood for while
Besides the current front wing, there are at least 2 other versions:

Eh? I thought back in 2010 any bodywork near the rear wing wasnt allowed?

hey guys,
can sm1 tell me how the aero paint works and what it is used for?
Aero paint is used to show which direction the air is flowing across the car's surface. As the car moves, air flows around it and the paint gets pushed along with the air before it dries up.
By seeing where the paint flow, it gives a good idea which direction the air is flowing. This is important because an F1 car is fine tuned to control how the air flow across every part of the car
Rumour says RB will be the next team with DDRS. Will be interesting to see when Lotus debut their system if it helps their Quali. If it does, I think we will face some trubble, given their strong racepace.
But Lotus system doesnīt seem that hard to copy. Not as hard as the original Merc system anyway.
massa used the best of his soft tyres
hamilton fastest on the hard tyres :s
Wathcing free practice on my television is a really good thing and i saw we are reaaly competitive with both tyres but Mclaren struggles with softs. We did just a few hot lap time with our boys and i can say our pace is reasonable. Now heavy rain has started and the sitiation may change in qualy.Lets wait and see what's gonna happen after two hours
I'm sorry guys wrong post please delete it :))
According to Ted on Skysports, it is rumored that the Lotus system is not really a DRS, because it works all the time, not just when DRS is activated. What happens is there is some kind of control system that will allow the airflow to go up to the rear wing and stall it when the car is at high speed. the control system is self working so it doesn't rely on DRS or driver input.
In other words, its advantageous all the time, not just in qualifying where the driver is free to use DRS. The flip side is it only reduces downforce by a few points, very small difference.
A passive DRS in other words like Merc had.
If it works they will be pretty strong I belive. I wonder if it is something we have to develop. Many races to go, and it would be a nice feature to have in Monza =)
Anyway, itīs a very very close among the top. Best year for as long Iīve been following F1
Lets hope we can push a bit more...
I'm so glad Ferrari finally have a car which drives well in the rain. Didn't like seeing the McLaren boys always outclassing us in the rain.
