I just thought Robert was progressing nicely. No idea it was going to be such an uphill battle for him.
He is a fighter so I hope he makes a full recovery. Sad, in that Reno he would have been soooooo close to the leaders and probably would have won a few races..
Hope he gets well soon.
Forza Jules
i know it is bad to say, but we are maybe a little lucky that he isnt driving for renault this year. otherwise, he may have had Renault overtaking us in the WCC. but then, if MacLaren and RedBull pulled out, we would win both titles easier,
and F1 is about challenge, so even so i'm sad that we didn't get to see what he could do in the car.

Kubica hopes to leave hospital “within ten days”
21 April 2011 by Keith Collantine
Robert Kubica says he hopes to be out of hospital within the next ten days.
The Polish driver has been in hospital for over two months following his rally crash at the start of February.
Kubica told Renault’s website: “I am starting to feel a lot better now. My recovery is moving in the right direction: my strength and weight are increasing day on day and as a result I will leave the Santa Corona hospital very soon.
“The mobility of my hand is limited but this is pretty normal in this kind of situation, because the connected arm muscles are still very weak due to the long period of immobility. Things are definitely improving day by day.
“As soon as I leave hospital, I’ll head to my home in Monaco for a short period of rest. Then I’ll move to Dr. [Riccardo] Ceccarelli‘s facilities in Italy where I will start a deep rehabilitation program and a preliminary soft training programme.
“The two programmes will gradually cross over based on the speed of my recovery.”
Kubica thanked his supporters who he said had helped his recovery: “I must admit that it’s been overwhelming and, yes, it’s helped me a lot.
“I really didn’t realise that quite this many fans were supporting me. I’m very flattered and I promise them that, when I’m back, I’ll give them my absolute best.”
Thanks Sianellen for posting update on Robert's condition.
It's great news that he is getting stronger and leaving hospital soon. Good to hear that his rehab. programme will begin soon.
Miss his gutsy drives.

Interview with Robert Kubica
21 April 2011
Hopes of a full recovery for the injured Robert Kubica have been raised, with the Polish driver recently talking about his current condition following a serious rally accident back in February. The Kraków-born man suffered significant injuries on the right-hand side of his body, but he is now on the road to recovery.
The Grand Prix winner underwent surgery on numerous occasions, and is now focusing on getting back to full health without further complications. In even more positive news, Kubica is hoping to leave hospital very soon after explaining that he is improving ‘day by day’.
Robert, just over 10 weeks on from your accident - how are you feeling?
I am starting to feel a lot better now. My recovery is moving in the right direction: my strength and weight are increasing day on day and as a result I will leave the Santa Corona hospital very soon.
When exactly will you leave the hospital?
I don’t have a precise date as yet but I hope to be able to leave within the next ten days.
Concerning the injury to your hand, how is the mobility now?
The mobility of my hand is limited but this is pretty normal in this kind of situation, because the connected arm muscles are still very weak due to the long period of immobility. Things are definitely improving day by day.
Can you tell us a little bit about your rehabilitation programme?
As soon as I leave hospital, I’ll head to my home in Monaco for a short period of rest. Then I’ll move to Dr. Ceccarelli’s facilities in Italy where I will start a deep rehabilitation program and a preliminary soft training programme. The two programmes will gradually cross over based on the speed of my recovery.
There’s been an amazing reaction from the fans – how has the response helped your recovery?
I must admit that it’s been overwhelming and, yes, it’s helped me a lot. I really didn’t realise that quite this many fans were supporting me. I’m very flattered and I promise them that, when I’m back, I’ll give them my absolute best.
Have you been staying in regular touch with the team since you’ve been away?
Yes, of course. Especially since the season started, I’ve been liaising with my engineers on what’s been going on over race weekends. They are sending me the race reports so I can remain up to date and fully informed, as if I were there at the tracks. Eric Boullier is also in constant contact, keeping up to date with my general condition.
Have you watched all the races so far this year, and what are you making of the new season and LRGP’s performances so far?
Yes I’ve watched them, and there is no doubt that it’s been a strong start to the season. The potential of the car, which I already noticed in the February Valencia test, seems to be confirmed. As usual, it’s now important that the development done in Enstone continues to produce consistent updates for maintaining this level of performance. The guys did a great job with this car and I’m sure they’ll continue to improve.
Finally, what messages would you like to pass on to your supporters in the Formula 1 world?
Well, just continue to enjoy the F1 show even though I’m not there at the moment. From my side, I’ll try to use my difficult experience to come back as strong as I possibly can.

Summer decision on Kubica's return
By Michele Lostia and Matt Beer Friday, April 22nd 2011, 13:47 GMT
The doctor overseeing Robert Kubica's recovery says it will be mid-summer before it is clear if and when the Pole will be ready to return to racing.
Kubica will finally leave the Santa Corona hospital - where he has been since his horrific rally crash in early February - in just over a week.
But when asked by Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport about when it would be possible to predict Kubica's racing future, Dr Riccardo Ceccarelli replied: "We'll understand six months after the accident: we need to wait for nature to run its course even though, knowing Robert, we are confident in his recovery strength."
Dr Ceccarelli said Kubica would receive extensive support from the medical team during his rehabilitation process.
"Gym workout will help him feel like a racing driver again," he explained.
"We'll keep in touch with the people who have followed him these months, first of all Dr [Igor] Rossello, who operated on the right hand, but we'll also look for more specialists.
"We have set up a pool of at least four people able to follow him during his daily six-eight hours of work, and we are getting a special treadmill that allows you to put the load over the right leg only partially. Due to his hand, leg, shoulder and elbow, Robert combines three patients into one."
The doctor underlined that it was too early to be certain how well Kubica's damaged hand in particular would recover.
"Rebuilding the nerves is the longest process, so it's difficult to understand in the first four months what the recovery will be like," said Dr Ceccarelli. "He has good sensitivity, but not in every spot. The hand is there and will regain good functionality.
"The leg poses little problem. Robert places the load on the left one and has started to load the other one progressively."

Could a mod please retitle this thread. Every time there's an update my heart jumps and I think someone's been involved in another serious accident for a moment and then I realise.
Can we call it "Robert's road to recovery" or "Bob watch" or something?

http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2011/0...f-f1-comeback/Doctor gives his view on Kubica’s chances of F1 comeback
by James Allen
I’ve been sent an interesting Q&A from colleagues at Italian website 422.com with Dr. Francesco Lanza, director of Orthopaedics at Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure, who carried out operations on Renault’s Robert Kubica, after his rallying accident two months ago.
Photo: Darren Heath
It’s worth highlighting because it is an independent point of view on Kubica’s situation and his chances of coming back to F1.
Lanza says that the Pole is” definitely fine, generally the situation is very satisfying.”
What made you decide about letting him leave the hospital?
“It was already scheduled, because you can’t stay for six-seven months in a hospital. After two and a half months, you should expect that. He needed to start his daily life again. I think that nobody wants to stay in a hospital. It was an joint decision, but a plan that we have been working on for some time. We were waiting for him to move by himself: he was limited by some fractures on which he couldn’t put any load and by the shoulder that didn’t let him use crutches. When he gained his independence, it was clear that he wanted to go home.”
What are the plans in the next few months?
“In the next few months he will have to undergo some checks to monitor the healing of the fractures, while he will go on with physioterapy in close locations to his home. Then he will come back to us to check the evolution, more or less monthly.
“Then, for the rehabilitation of the hand, he’s working with physiotherapists. With us, the rehabilitation is less specific and partly already done: the shoulder, for example. The rest will be done by others as well, as his doctor, who has a dedicated center for sports activity (Dr. Ceccarelli).”
As far as his comeback in an F1 car is concerned, what’s your opinion at the moment?
“You can’t make any predictions. I’d say the perspectives are definitely much better than when we started and this is very important.
“We can’t commit ourselves, but we can’t either dismiss anything. His functional recovery surprised us as well: if this will let him do something very specific as driving a Formula One car, it’s still very difficult to say. But we have the necessary conditions, even higher than we expected. We can sincerely say we are optimistic that this person could recover a good function of the limb. With the will and the grit he has shown, we can’t rule anything out.
“Remember that the biggest injuries were with the nerves, which have long lead times to heal: at least six months. But we already have encouraging signs of recovery. I think a first time to take stock of the recovery has to be done six months after the accident.
“He’s very motivated. Maybe because of his job, he’s used to have grit in the car and he shows it in all the aspects of life, as well.”
It will be a long road. The nerve injuries were very severe and it will be a miracle if he recovers enough feel to drive an F1 car on the limit as he used to. But clearly Kubica is massively motivated and his career to date shows how he has been able to overcome adversity to reach the top. It’s a fascinating human interest story.
I think he is right though, all depends on that hand and how much feel he can recover. It's just sad because he was beginning to reach he's peak. Hope he comes back stronger he is one of the very best F1 drivers.
BOULLIER NOT SURE KUBICA CAN RETURN TO F1
Saturday 7 May at 12:01 : May 7 (GMM)
Eric Boullier insists it is too early to say when or even if Robert Kubica will return to formula one.
The injured Pole is now out of hospital and reportedly spending up to seven hours per day on his rehabilitation, particularly to restore the functionality of his right hand that was almost severed in a rally crash in February.
"I don't know when or if Robert can come back," Renault team boss Boullier is quoted by the German news agency SID in Turkey.
"He is making very good progress, but it is a long way back from such a serious injury. So I don't want to make any predictions," added the Frenchman.
On the other hand, Boullier said he is very happy with Kubica's substitute, Nick Heidfeld.
"He is working very well and is very communicative," he said of the 33-year-old German.
"What I hope and expect for this season is to be regularly in the points and to occasionally go to the podium," added Boullier.

Renault: Kubica unlikely to race in 2011
By Pablo Elizalde and Matt Beer
Renault team owner Gerard Lopez says Robert Kubica could assess his fitness by driving in a Friday practice session at a grand prix later this year - but reckons it is highly unlikely that the Pole will be fit enough to race again during 2011.
Kubica is continuing his rehabilitation at home following the rally crash nearly four months ago that left him with multiple injuries including a partially severed right arm.
The doctors treating him have suggested it will be the summer before they can predict a potential date for his Formula 1 return, and Lopez said the door was open for Kubica to participate in a Friday practice session if it would be helpful, even if he was not up to racing this season.
"We'll probably get him to test on a Friday at some point during the year, but I'm sure his return is not possible this year," Lopez told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.
Lopez warned that it was still too early to say if Kubica would even be able to continue his F1 career, let alone to predict his return.
"Robert has survived a spectacular accident and now comes the most difficult part, which is to recover fully, something that no one, not himself, not the doctors, not ourselves, knows if he will achieve," he said.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/91677
I don't think he will race in 2011 or 2012 in F1.
is there any picture of him after the accident at all?
i mean recent pictures not the the day of accident
well hope he get a speedy and full recovery for his sake and gets back in f1 car soon as the Renault is driving around 0.5-1.0 sec slower than if he had been in it .
Injured Renault driver Robert Kubica could still make his return to Formula 1 in 2011, according to his manager Daniele Morelli.
Renault boss Gerard Lopez said Kubica, who was injured in a rally crash in February, would not race this season but may take part in a Friday practice.
But Morelli told BBC Sport in Monaco that was not necessarily the case.
"I wouldn't suggest betting Robert won't be back before the end of 2011," Morelli said.
"What Lopez said is not corresponding with the information that we have. There is no basis to make such a statement."
Kubica is recuperating at his home in Monte Carlo after suffering a partially severed hand, as well as arm and leg fractures in a high-speed rally crash in Italy's Ronde di Andorra.
Nick Heidfeld is standing in for Kubica at Renault but Morelli says it is still too early to rule the Pole out of returning to his race seat with seven months of the season left.
He also questioned Lopez's suggestion that Kubica would return first in what is considered to be a more junior Friday testing role.
"We [speak] daily with Robert, we know what the doctors are saying, what [Renault team doctor] Dr Ceccarelli, who is coordinating the recovery programme, is saying," Morelli continued.
"We have a lot of information and what Lopez is saying is not corresponding with the information that we have.
"To give a Friday session to Robert is the minimum that the team should give to support its driver. It looks to me kind of an insufficient proposal.
"When Robert is back, he will be back because he will be capable of doing what he did the day before the accident."
Kubica had a small operation earlier this month to remove adhesions that were affecting the functionality of his right forearm and elbow muscles.
The 26-year-old, who spent 10 weeks recovering in the Santa Corona Hospital in Italy, is now expected to begin a normal training programme by the end of July.
That plan would also include going into a driving simulator so he can re-learn the instinctive hand movements required in F1.
"The simulator will be one of the tools that will be used in order to give Robert again the feeling of speed," added Morelli.
"He needs to go back to the normal movements that he used to do automatically.
"There is no concern that the recovery will not be complete or at least sufficient to drive an F1 car.
"Robert's strength, weight and general condition have been showing that we are in the right direction.
"If the trend keeps going like it is now the doctors think that Robert can start his training programme at the end of July to rebuild his normal conditions: running, strength, breathing. There is no concern that he will not be fit in order to be back."
Kubica has been on the podium twice in Monaco, finishing second in 2008 for BMW Sauber and third for Renault last season.
